Most new fragrance retailers lose money in the first order, not because the product is bad, but because they never asked who they were actually buying from. There are two very different businesses hiding behind the word "wholesaler," and confusing them is the single most common mistake first-time buyers make.
Manufacturer or reseller: know which one you're talking to
A manufacturer formulates and bottles the fragrance itself. A reseller buys stock from manufacturers (sometimes several of them) and sells it on in bulk, usually at a markup and with less control over consistency between batches.
Neither is automatically the better choice. Resellers can offer lower minimums and a wider mixed catalog, which is useful if you're testing demand before committing capital. Manufacturers give you direct pricing, consistent formulation batch to batch, and someone to hold accountable if quality slips. What matters is knowing which one you're dealing with, and adjusting your due diligence accordingly. If you're buying from a reseller, ask where they source from. If you're buying from a manufacturer, ask how long they've been producing and how they control batch consistency.
Royal Perfumes is a manufacturer: we've formulated and bottled fragrances in Istanbul for 10+ years, across a catalog of 1,300+ models, currently shipping to businesses in 35+ countries.
The five decisions that actually determine your cost
Every wholesale fragrance quote comes down to five variables. Change any one of them and the price per unit moves.
- Supplier type — manufacturer pricing is typically lower than reseller pricing, but minimums are often higher.
- Order quantity (MOQ tier) — most suppliers price in tiers. A 500-unit order and a 50-unit order are not the same conversation.
- Payment structure — deposit-plus-balance, full prepayment, or (for established buyers) credit terms.
- Shipping method — air freight is fast and expensive; sea freight is slow and cheap; the right answer depends on your order size and cash flow.
- Product mix — a single SKU at volume prices differently than a mixed pallet of 40 different scents.
A supplier that quotes you a single flat per-unit price without asking about any of these five things either has a very simple catalog or isn't pricing carefully.
What "wholesale price" actually includes
A real wholesale operation isn't just a formula and a bottle. Behind the per-unit price sits a warehouse, quality control, order processing, packing, and shipping coordination. That's why per-unit cost typically sits well above raw production cost, and why buyers with larger, repeat orders see meaningfully better pricing than a first-time buyer opening an account with a small trial order. If a quote seems too low to cover any of that, it's worth asking what's being cut.
Due diligence questions worth asking before you pay a deposit
- Can I see photos or a sample of the actual product, not a stock catalog image?
- What happens if a shipment arrives damaged or short?
- Is pricing different for a single scent at volume vs. a mixed assortment?
- How is the order confirmed — is there a step where I approve final pricing and shipping cost before paying?
That last question matters more than it sounds. A supplier who locks in your price and shipping cost automatically, before you've had a chance to review the total, leaves no room to negotiate freight for larger orders. At Royal Perfumes, every order is reviewed and confirmed with the buyer over WhatsApp or Telegram before payment — final pricing and shipping cost are agreed first, not charged automatically at checkout.
How this works with Royal Perfumes
Our threshold for wholesale rates is 500+ units, with special pricing on both niche and designer-inspired lines above that volume. Below 500 units, standard per-unit pricing applies with no minimum order requirement. Either way, the process is the same:
- Browse the full catalog or tell us what you're looking for.
- Send us your target country and estimated quantity on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- We confirm final pricing and the shipping quote for your destination before anything is charged.
- Once approved, we prepare and ship your order, with tracking provided along the way.
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, shipped back by mail at no cost to you — see our Shipping & Returns policy for the full terms.
